   Proposal Description:
   We propose a secondary analysis of data related to affective neuropsychiatric symptoms (A-NPS) (depression, anxiety, irritability) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild Alzheimer???s dementia (AD) using clinical and neuropathological data collected by the National Alzheimer???s Coordinating Center (NACC).  The overarching goal of the project is to evaluate the neuroanatomical substrate of A-NPS in the earliest stages of Alzheimer???s disease.  The NACC is the only currently available large-scale database in the United States that will permit the proposed study.  The primary goal of this project is to investigate the relationship between Alzheimer???s disease pathology, specifically neurofibrillary tangle and beta-amyloid pathology, and clinically significant A-NPS in patients with the earliest stages of Alzheimer???s disease.  Based on the results of this initial analysis, we will further employ these data to perform follow-up analyses of the relationship between AD pathology and A-NPS.
